Sustainability Manager Port of New Orleans


The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) Sustainability Manager, Emily Federer, has worked at the Port since 2014. As the Sustainability Manager, she is responsible for overall environmental compliance, sustainability programming and certifications, planning, and port permitting.

Emily previously worked at Jefferson Parish Environmental, the Sigma-Aldrich Chemical Company, and the City of Racine, Wisconsin’s Environmental Health Laboratory. Emily has a Master of Science in Public Health in Environmental Science from Tulane University School of Public Health, a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, and is an Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP), certified by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure.

Emily is working on developing forward looking initiatives for energy use, emissions reductions, and resilient and sustainable practices within the New Orleans maritime sector. She was the project manager for the Port’s 2020 Inner Harbor Economic Revitalization Plan (PIER Plan), is part of the project management team for a proposed new container terminal project on the Mississippi River, the Louisiana International Terminal (LIT), and is the project manager for the Clean Truck Replacement Incentive Program (Clean TRIP; http://cleantrip-portno.com).

Emily’s current focus for LIT is to instill Envision sustainability framework within the new development, ensuring this major infrastructure project is constructed with maximum consideration for future climate challenges and shifting energy needs, as well as minimizing negative impacts to the environment and surrounding communities, while providing new opportunities to local residents.

She is professionally motivated by interactions of industry, humans and the environment, and innovative approaches to environmental and community improvements through enhancing sustainability practices. Port NOLA has been a Green Marine certified green port since 2015. Emily lives in the New Orleans metropolitan area with her husband and two sons.
